Why Adding a Hair and Makeup Artist to your Production isn't a luxury but a Necessity

Posted on September 26, 2024 by Stephanie Pierce

My long time-friend and professional HMUA (Hair & Makeup Artist), Andrea Vieth just wrapped her position as Makeup Department Head on the film Alarum. She’s as we say “has been in the biz” for over two decades and has seen firsthand just how much adding a professional Hair & Make-Up artist to up to your video production can level it up! We’ve asked her to give us her top five reasons on why a professional HMUA is a must have on your next production. Here's what she said:

  1. Professionalism: An HMUA brings a level of professionalism to your production. We’re trained in techniques specific to video production and photography ensuring that actors/models, and non professional talent look their best on camera. HMUAs understand how makeup translates on camera under different lighting conditions. We can adjust makeup accordingly to ensure that all talent looks their best in various scenes and lighting setups.

  2. Enhanced Image: Proper hair and makeup can ensure the appearance of your talent appropriately matches your brand or tone. It can help to convey characters or concepts more effectively. It’s also crucial for maintaining continuity and ensuring that your final product meets the desired aesthetic standards.

  3. Confidence and Comfort: This is a big one! Proper hair and makeup can boost the confidence and comfort of your talent. This can be especially important when you’re capturing employee testimonials or featuring people who have never been on camera before. It can be overwhelming staring into lens with lights beaming all around. Making your talent feel confident in their appearance allows them to focus on telling their story.

  4. Appearance Responsibility: Hiring an experienced HMUA means having someone dedicated to overseeing the appearance of your talent on-camera. As a trained professional, they can propose solutions when there are concerns about skin shininess or hairdo's casting facial shadows. They are honed in on talent appearance only as the rest of the crew is focused on full shot composition, content, and delivery.

  5. Creative Collaboration: HMUAs often bring creative input to the table, collaborating with directors, stylists, and other crew members to achieve the desired look and feel for the project.

Thanks to Andrea for these insights! At Spotted Yeti, we frequently recommend an HMUA to ensure the quality and success of your project. Ask us more about how this position will level-up your specific production.
